During the 2005 terrorist attacks on London's tube, trapped passengers stealthily snapped photos with their mobile phones and wirelessly uploaded them to Yahoo!'s photo-sharing website Flickr. Within minutes they were posted on Yahoo!'s news sites. Hot off the press just isn't fast enough anymore.

Despite their alleged contempt for advertising, mobile phone users are far likelier than the general public to act on it. Response rates are 4 to 10 percent compared with less than 1 percent for direct mailing or advertising.
